Vintage is Hot by Leila Summers

Vintage is hot right now with celebrities sporting vintage wear on the runways and incorporating fashion from yesteryears into their dress style. Durban has recently gained a trendy vintage clothing shop. Bonnie & Clyde opened its doors in Glenwood in November last year and is fast becoming the new hot spot for local fashionistas to pick up one-of-a-kind garments.

Bonnie & Clyde’s tag line is ‘saving the planet one thread at a time’. The premise is that, at a time when the planet is taking a beating, recycling quality old fabrics like scintillating silver Lurex or silk wool blends or brocades, adds a breath of unique amidst a throw-away world.

Dressing has become an art and is all about individuality rather than fast fashion and mass consumerism. The point of vintage is to take the best of each decade and add a touch of cool to modern outfits by mixing old with new. For example, rough hewn denim with new linen pants, granny silk scarves with rayon dresses or a treasured diamante pin on a modern corduroy jacket.

Bonnie & Clyde specialises in revamping and reinventing vintage and retro clothing and accessories. The shop stocks natty chic one-offs from the 50s through to the 80s with the likes of Joseph Conran, Burberry, Levi’s, Julie Whyte and Miss Elliot having been on their racks. The inventory is high-quality and constantly changing. Clothing is sourced locally, although a few of the pieces come from Canada and England. Everything has been cleaned and buttoned, altered or otherwise reinvented where necessary, and can be worn off the hanger.

Included in the eclectic mix is a collection of ladies vintage dresses and frocks, blouses, knitwear, skirts, minis, eveningwear, suits, waistcoats, jackets and corsets and a limited number of men’s ties, cravats and vintage shirts and jackets.

In addition, there is a fun assortment of vintage accessories including brightly coloured scarves, elegant gloves, dapper hats, leather belts, pretty brooches and other retro jewellery that can add a splash of life and take an outfit from drab to fab.

For those with a handbag obsession, Bonnie & Clyde has a variety of classic and designer leather handbags, clutches, purses and evening bags. Spotted was a beautiful 50s Dubarry Modelle made in England by H Wald & Co.

Scattered throughout the store is a small selection of European designer vintage footwear. One pair that caught my eye was a pair of Sabrina court shoes, made in Cyprus. Sabrina now only makes footwear on order. Unfortunately, they were not in my size.

I did, however, walk away with a stunning 60s velvet dress, a costume ring, and an exquisite keep-me-forever evening gown.

Prices are extremely reasonable for the calibre of vintage offered. A leather clutch is sold for around R55 and an unaltered pristine silk and wool blend long 50s dress costs R345. Handmade Italian shoes are sold for around R185.

Bonnie & Clyde also sells a few modern classic designer brands such as Jigsaw, Gap, Noa Noa, Whistles, Karen Millen and Boden.

Vintage is a look that is not going anywhere. So visit this fantastic little shop for some genuine treasures and enjoy one of the best cappuccinos in Durban while there. This piece is just spectacular and my heart did quicken when I found it. Possibly 50s and unaltered and in pristine condition which may be explained by its Mayfair label. This is a silk and wool blend which is very likely not made anymore and manages not to be itchy. Size 34 to 36 in an iridescent turquoise which seems to adjust to suit the wearer…must be worn to a very special occasion!

I have a friend, Darren, who is an amazing photographer. I mean, this guy is the real deal! He is not one of the hundreds of regular Durban photographers. On top of his astounding eye for seeing the unusual and unique in everyday things, he is an avid vintage collector of all things cool, including photographs and old photography equipment. 2010 has been a boomer year! Bonnie & Clyde came into being and only three months later opened our shop @ The Corner Café. The pink ruffle surprise is a rayon blend top which can be worn as a jacket. Incredibly comfortable and modest in short sleeves and high neck it looks great with jeans no matter how young you are. It harks back to the 1950s despite being a relatively new piece. The ruffles add interest without being frilly. It is a size 30 to 32.
